Chapter Fourteen

When I regained consciousness, I was just where I had been in the forest off of Florence’s property. My arms were firmly wrapped around the trunk of the oak tree, my fingers still clasped together. Only now I wasn’t alone. A dark figure was standing next to me. I unclasped my hands and pulled my body away from the trunk.

“Cole? What are you doing here?” His face was expressionless, but I felt something in his being, like concern mixed with a little bit of fascination.

“Witches aren’t the only creatures to wander the woods on a full moon.” His voice was calm and steady, but I saw the hint of a smile grace his lips. I knew that what he said was true, but I still hadn’t expected to see him here in these woods.

“Are you going to tell me there are werewolves out here next?”

“Definitely not. You know they’re extinct, don’t you?” He gave me a look as if to say that he wasn’t sure.

“Why does everyone assume I know nothing about the magical world?” I huffed. I knew that werewolves were extinct, but there were other beasts that roamed the woods on full moons. They usually stayed out of the way of witches, hunting for more vulnerable prey. Which is why Reya had to stay back with Hester.

“Do you want me to answer that?” Cole mumbled.

I glared at him.

He chuckled at my iciness, which only irritated me further.

“Sorry,” he said when it became clear that he was the only one amused. “What happened when you wrapped yourself around the tree?” he asked, changing the subject.

I exhaled before answering. “I saw Isaac. He told me that we were dreaming.” A shiver ran down my spine thinking of the interaction. Surprisingly, Cole remained completely calm. I almost questioned if he’d heard me correctly.

“You were writhing against the tree,” he said delicately.

“I was?” I looked back at the trunk I had wrapped my body around. I didn’t remember what my body had done, I hadn’t felt it. All I had been aware of was what was happening in my subconscious. With Isaac.

“Yes. I couldn’t tell if you were in pain or—”

“No.” I cut him off. “I was fine. I wanted out but that’s it.” Isaac hadn’t been able to touch me. I knew that wasn’t going to be the case next time. Seeing him had confirmed my suspicions that if he broke the curse, I was going to be in immediate danger.

“What did he say?” Cole asked, his face too serious for my liking. It was disturbing to see a vampire as old and strong as Cole, with as much political power as he had, concerned.

“A lot.” I shrugged. “I think my favorite part was how he wants to eat me.”

Cole laughed again. I liked his laugh. It was light and airy and made my heart feel warm inside of my chest. The sound reminded me of youth, which was ironic since he was ancient. I still didn’t know Cole’s age exactly, but it was old.
